Clipboard

What copy and paste carries inside the document and across applications.

Within the same document

Copy and paste keeps paragraph and character formatting, tabs, breaks, images, links, and tables, and a copied grid of cells pasted over selected cells fills them in place. Comment markers and bookmarks are dropped where the copy is pasted, and a copied footnote or endnote reference is pasted with a copy of its note; cutting commented text leaves the comment behind, the way deleting the text does.

Pasting from elsewhere

Pasting from another document or application keeps supported character formatting, paragraphs, line breaks, links, tables, and common lists, including the lists Word writes as plain paragraphs; heading styles are matched to the destination document. Pasted tables use equal-width columns across the destination section's body width; their source column widths are not retained. Pasted text fills every selected table cell. Unreadable content falls back to the clipboard's plain text, or leaves the selection intact.

Copying to other applications

A copy carries the text, its styles, tables, images, and links, and none of the document's own markup, comment authorship, or note bodies.

Plain text and the context menu

Mod+Shift+V pastes the clipboard's plain text, ignoring any formatting and images. Right-click Paste accepts formatted text and images.
